Example Data Table

Example A Example B Interpretation Relation Difference
0.75 3/4 Equal values in decimal and fraction form = 0
1.2 7/6 Decimal slightly exceeds the fraction > 0.033333
-0.5 -2/5 More negative value is smaller < -0.1
12.5% 0.1 Percentage converts to 0.125 > 0.025
2 1/4 2.20 Mixed fraction is 2.25 > 0.05

Formula Used

1) Direct comparison

Compare A and B using the sign of A - B. If A - B is positive, A is larger. If negative, B is larger. If zero, the values are equal.

2) Absolute difference

Absolute Difference = |A - B|. This shows the size of the gap without caring which value is bigger.

3) Ratio

Ratio = A / B, provided B is not zero. This tells how many times Value A contains Value B.

4) Common denominator method

For fractions a/b and c/d, rewrite them with a shared denominator: (ad)/(bd) and (bc)/(bd). Then compare the numerators.

5) Percentage metric

Depending on your selected option, the calculator uses either (A - B) / |B| × 100, (A - B) / |A| × 100, or |A - B| / midpoint × 100.

How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter the first quantity in Value A.

2. Enter the second quantity in Value B.

3. Choose how many decimal places you want in the output.

4. Add a tolerance if you want near-equal values treated as approximately equal.

5. Pick a percentage metric and fraction display style.

6. Click Compare Values to view the result, graph, table, and downloadable summary.

FAQs

1) What inputs does this calculator accept?

It accepts decimals, integers, fractions, mixed fractions, percentages, and scientific notation. Examples include 0.625, 5, 3/8, 1 1/2, 12.5%, and 2.4e-3.

2) How does it compare a decimal and a fraction?

The tool converts both entries into numeric values, then compares them directly. It also shows fraction forms and a common-denominator view to make the comparison easier to understand.

3) What does the tolerance setting do?

Tolerance lets you treat close values as approximately equal. If the absolute difference is smaller than or equal to the tolerance, the result shows an approximation symbol instead of strict inequality.

4) Why show a common denominator?

A common denominator makes fraction comparisons transparent. Once both values use the same denominator, you only need to compare numerators to see which value is larger.

5) Can it compare negative values?

Yes. Negative decimals and negative fractions are supported. The calculator preserves sign, so comparisons like -0.5 versus -2/5 work correctly.

6) Are decimal-to-fraction conversions exact?

Finite decimals are converted exactly. Scientific notation entries are converted numerically, then expressed as a close fraction if needed, so those fraction displays may be approximate.

7) What does the ratio result mean?

The ratio shows how large Value A is relative to Value B. A ratio of 1 means equality, while 2 means Value A is twice Value B.

8) Why are CSV and PDF downloads useful?

They make it easy to save results for homework, auditing, tutoring, or reporting. CSV works well with spreadsheets, while PDF is useful for printable summaries.
