Formula Used

1. Shift Span Hours
Shift Span = End Time − Start Time. Overnight shifts add 24 hours when the end falls on the next day.

2. Paid Hours
Paid Hours = Shift Span − Unpaid Break Hours.

3. Regular Hours
Regular Hours = Minimum of Paid Hours and Overtime Threshold.

4. Overtime Hours
Overtime Hours = Paid Hours − Overtime Threshold, but never below zero.

5. Night Hours
Night Hours = Overlap between worked time and the night premium window. If break start is blank, the unpaid break is centered automatically.

6. Gross Pay
Gross Pay = (Regular Hours × Hourly Rate) + (Overtime Hours × Hourly Rate × Overtime Multiplier) + (Night Hours × Night Premium Per Hour).

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can this calculator handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the shift as crossing midnight and adds the correct next-day hours automatically.

2. What happens if I leave break start empty?

The tool centers the unpaid break inside the shift. This gives a practical estimate when you know break length but do not know the exact break timing.

3. Does night premium replace overtime pay?

No. This setup adds night premium on top of base and overtime pay. That reflects many workplace policies, but you should match the method to your local rules.

4. Can I use different overtime thresholds?

Yes. Enter any overtime trigger you use, such as 8 hours, 7.5 hours, or another internal threshold based on your scheduling policy.

5. Is the break always unpaid?

In this calculator, the break minutes reduce paid hours. If your policy includes paid breaks, enter zero unpaid minutes or adjust the rate method outside this page.

6. What do the CSV and PDF downloads include?

They export the displayed result summary, including shift window, paid hours, overtime hours, night hours, and pay values for easy recordkeeping.

7. Can I compare multiple shifts here?

This page calculates one shift at a time. You can save each result with CSV or PDF, then compare several shifts in your own spreadsheet or payroll file.

8. Is this calculator a substitute for payroll compliance review?

No. It is a planning and estimation tool. Always confirm labor rules, union terms, overtime laws, and payroll settings with your legal or HR operations process.
