Plotly graph

The graph shows how installed courses build cumulative coverage across the stacked wall dimension.

Example data table

Use these sample scenarios to compare wall sizes, effective coverage, waste allowance, and final board needs.

Project Wall size Effective coverage Waste Estimated boards
Accent wall 12 ft × 8 ft 5.25 in 10% 20
Bedroom feature wall 14 ft × 9 ft 5.00 in 12% 31
Hallway run 20 ft × 8 ft 5.50 in 8% 33
Porch wall 18 ft × 10 ft 5.25 in 15% 42

Formula used

Gross wall area = wall width × wall height
Net wall area = gross wall area - total openings area
Effective coverage width = actual board width - lap overlap + reveal gap
Rows = ceiling(stacked dimension ÷ effective coverage width)
Boards per row = ceiling(span dimension ÷ board length)
Coverage per board = board length × effective coverage width
Recommended boards = ceiling(max(area board count, adjusted layout count) × waste factor)
Total cost = (recommended boards × price per board) + tax

How to use this calculator

  3. Enter wall width, wall height, and total opening area.
  4. Fill in board width, overlap, reveal, and stock length.
  5. Add waste allowance, pack size, board price, stud spacing, and tax.
  6. Press the calculate button to show results above the form.
  7. Review board count, rows, fasteners, pack needs, and costs.
  8. Use the CSV or PDF buttons to save your estimate.

FAQs

1. What does this shiplap wall calculator estimate?

It estimates gross area, net area, course count, boards per row, recommended boards with waste, packs needed, fasteners, and material cost. It also considers openings, overlap, reveal spacing, and tax for a more practical purchasing estimate.

2. Why does the calculator ask for actual width, overlap, and reveal?

Shiplap coverage depends on how much each board visibly covers after the lap joint and reveal are considered. Using only nominal width can understate or overstate material needs, especially on larger walls.

3. Should I use net area or layout count when ordering?

The calculator compares both. Area count handles overall coverage, while layout count reflects row-by-row cutting reality. The recommended value uses the larger practical requirement, then adds waste for safer ordering.

4. How much waste should I add for shiplap boards?

Many straight walls work well with 8% to 12% waste. Add more for corners, outlets, windows, pattern matching, damaged boards, or mixed lengths. Complex spaces often need 12% to 18%.

5. Can this calculator handle vertical shiplap layouts?

Yes. Change the orientation field to vertical boards. The calculator then swaps the stacked and spanned wall dimensions so the row logic matches a vertical installation plan.

6. How are fasteners estimated?

Fasteners are estimated from the number of rows, the stud spacing, and the chosen number of fasteners per stud crossing. It is a planning estimate, not a substitute for manufacturer fastening instructions.

7. What if I buy shiplap in packs instead of single boards?

Enter the number of boards per pack. The calculator rounds up to the next full pack and shows any extra boards created by pack sizing. That helps compare ordering convenience against overbuying.

8. Does the cost result include labor?

No. The cost section covers boards and tax only, based on your entered board price. Labor, primer, paint, trim, caulk, adhesive, and delivery should be added separately if needed.
