Example Data Table

This sample shows one realistic scenario for planning a two-layer installation with 4×8 boards.

Item Sample Value Item Sample Value
Gross Project Area 1200 sq ft Openings Area 140 sq ft
Waste Allowance 10% Sheet Size 8 ft × 4 ft
Thickness per Sheet 2 in Layers 2
R-Value per Inch 5 Sheets per Pack 10
Cost per Sheet $29.50 Accessory Cost per Sheet $3.25
Labor Cost per Installed Sq Ft $0.85 Foam Density 2.00 lb/cu ft
Purchase Sheets Required 73 Packs Required 8
Total Installed Cost $4,192.75 Assembly R-Value 20.00

Formula Used

1) Net insulated area
Net Area = Gross Project Area − Openings Area
2) Board coverage per sheet
Sheet Area = Sheet Length × Sheet Width
3) Installed area across all layers
Installed Area = Net Area × Number of Layers
4) Material area including waste
Effective Material Area = Installed Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
5) Sheets and packs required
Raw Sheets = Effective Material Area ÷ Sheet Area
Purchase Sheets = Round Up Raw Sheets
Packs Required = Round Up (Purchase Sheets ÷ Sheets per Pack)
6) Thermal performance
Assembly Thickness = Sheet Thickness × Layers
Assembly R-Value = Assembly Thickness × R-Value per Inch
7) Volume, weight, and cost
Volume = Purchase Sheets × Sheet Area × (Thickness ÷ 12)
Weight = Volume × Density
Total Cost = Material Cost + Accessory Cost + Labor Cost

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the total gross area you want to insulate.
  2. Add the area of windows, doors, vents, and other openings.
  3. Enter the foam board sheet size in feet and the thickness in inches.
  4. Set the number of layers for your wall, ceiling, or foundation assembly.
  5. Provide the board thermal value, sheets per pack, and pricing values.
  6. Press the calculate button to show results above the form.
  7. Review sheets, packs, coverage, costs, and the waste sensitivity graph.
  8. Use the CSV or PDF buttons to save a shareable estimate summary.

FAQs

1) What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates net insulated area, required sheet count, pack count, assembly thickness, total R-value, foam volume, estimated weight, and project cost.

2) How are openings handled?

Enter windows, doors, vents, and other uninsulated sections as total openings area. The calculator subtracts them from gross area before sizing materials.

3) Why should I add a waste allowance?

Waste covers offcuts, trimming, damage, irregular corners, and layout inefficiency. Simple layouts may need less, while complex penetrations usually need more.

4) Does using more layers change the R-value?

Yes. Total assembly thickness equals thickness per sheet multiplied by layers. Assembly R-value then equals total thickness multiplied by R-value per inch.

5) Why is labor based on installed area across layers?

Each layer adds cutting, handling, fitting, fastening, and alignment work. Using installed area across all layers gives a fuller installation estimate.

6) Are sheets and packs rounded up?

Yes. The calculator rounds sheets to whole boards and then rounds packs again. That matches real purchasing conditions at most suppliers.

7) Can I use this for walls, roofs, and basement projects?

Yes. It works for any surface where rigid foam board coverage is measured by area, provided your dimensions, layers, and costs are accurate.

8) Is this enough for final ordering?

It is a strong planning tool, but verify fire rating, compressive strength, facing type, code requirements, and actual site dimensions before purchase.
