Calculator Inputs

Reset Form

Formula Used

1) Material mass per meter
Material mass per meter = mass flow rate ÷ belt speed
2) Friction force
Friction force = friction factor × total moving mass per meter × conveyor length × g × cos(angle)
3) Friction power
Friction power = friction force × belt speed ÷ 1000
4) Lift power
Lift power = mass flow rate × g × vertical lift ÷ 1000
5) Running shaft power
Running shaft power = friction power + lift power
6) Acceleration power
Acceleration force = total moving mass × belt speed ÷ start time
Acceleration power = acceleration force × belt speed ÷ 1000
7) Motor output power
Motor output power = (design shaft power ÷ mechanical efficiency) × service factor
8) Electrical input power
Electrical input power = motor output power ÷ motor efficiency

This calculator is intended for preliminary sizing. Final design should consider belt type, take-up method, feeder loading, pulley losses, starting method, and manufacturer data.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter conveyor length and vertical lift. Use a negative lift for decline conveyors.
  2. Enter capacity, belt speed, bulk density, and belt width.
  3. Add belt and idler mass values for the moving equipment.
  4. Set friction factor, efficiencies, service factor, startup factor, and start time.
  5. Enter pulley diameter, voltage, power factor, and operating cost inputs.
  6. Press the calculate button to show the result above the form.
  7. Review the detailed table, torque estimate, energy use, and graph.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates conveyor running power, startup allowance, motor output, electrical input, torque, current, and energy cost. It is useful for early design checks and equipment comparison.

2) Can I use it for decline conveyors?

Yes. Enter a negative vertical lift. A negative running power result may indicate braking or regenerative behavior. In that case, check holdback and control requirements separately.

3) Why are efficiency values included?

Mechanical efficiency accounts for drive losses. Motor efficiency converts shaft demand to electrical input. Both values help estimate the actual motor size and operating energy more realistically.

4) What friction factor should I use?

Use values based on your conveyor arrangement, maintenance condition, and manufacturer references. A small change in friction factor can materially change the motor size, so use a conservative value when uncertain.

5) Does belt width affect the power result?

Indirectly. Belt width helps estimate cross section and loading depth, but the main power drivers are flow rate, lift, belt speed, mass per meter, friction, and efficiency.

6) Why is startup power shown separately?

Starting a loaded conveyor can require more power than steady running. The startup allowance helps size the drive for acceleration and avoid undersized motor selection.

7) Is the recommended motor size always final?

No. It is a rounded preliminary selection from standard sizes. Final motor choice should match the gearbox, duty cycle, ambient conditions, starting method, and supplier recommendations.

8) Can I use this for site budgeting?

Yes. Enter operating hours, annual days, and energy rate. The tool then estimates daily energy use and yearly cost for fast budgeting and option comparison.
