Calculator Inputs
This educational tool uses densitometry-style areal calculations. Preset references are editable and should be replaced with your local clinical reference dataset when needed.
Plotly Graph
The graph compares measured BMD with selected young adult and age-matched mean references.
Formula Used
1. Areal Bone Mineral Density
BMD = BMC / Area
2. T-Score
T-Score = (Measured BMD − Young Adult Mean) / Young Adult SD
3. Z-Score
Z-Score = (Measured BMD − Age-Matched Mean) / Age-Matched SD
4. Monitoring Change
% Change = ((Current BMD − Previous BMD) / Previous BMD) × 100
LSC95 = Current BMD × (Precision Error / 100) × 2.77
Physics Context
Bone density scanning is rooted in attenuation physics. The scan estimates mineral content by measuring how much energy is absorbed by bone and soft tissue. The calculator then converts that measured or derived content into areal density, reference deviations, and follow-up change metrics.
How to Use This Calculator
- Select the scan site, sex, and age.
- Enter measured BMD directly, or supply BMC and area.
- Keep preset references enabled, or type your own means and SD values.
- Add previous BMD for change tracking and precision error for LSC95.
- Press the calculate button to show results above the form.
- Review the table, graph, classification, and export buttons.

| B | Femoral Neck | 27.60 | 35.20 | 0.7841 | -0.60 | -0.15 | Normal bone density |
| C | Total Hip | 23.40 | 31.50 | 0.7429 | -1.48 | -0.92 | Low bone density |
FAQs
1. What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates areal bone mineral density, T-score, Z-score, follow-up change, and least significant change. It is useful for education, reporting practice, and densitometry-style calculations.
2. What is the difference between BMC and BMD?
BMC is the mineral content in grams. BMD divides that mineral content by projected area, giving areal density in g/cm². The calculator can derive BMD from BMC and area.
3. What does a T-score represent?
A T-score compares measured BMD with a young adult reference mean. It expresses the difference in standard deviations and is commonly used for adult bone density classification.
4. What does a Z-score represent?
A Z-score compares measured BMD with an age-matched reference population. It shows whether the result is expected for the person’s age and sex group.
5. Why does the calculator include least significant change?
LSC95 helps judge whether a follow-up difference is likely larger than measurement noise. It uses the entered precision error to estimate the threshold for meaningful change.
6. Are the preset references universal?
No. They are editable example presets for educational use. Clinical interpretation should use device-specific and population-specific reference values from the relevant scan center or protocol.
7. Can I enter a measured BMD directly?
Yes. Enter measured BMD if it is already known. If you leave that field empty, the tool will calculate BMD from bone mineral content and projected area.
8. Is this tool a medical diagnosis system?
No. It is a structured calculation and reporting aid. Clinical decisions should be made by qualified professionals using full scan reports, medical history, and validated reference datasets.
