Quick Guide
This tool combines diagnostic criteria with a weighted lifestyle score. It helps screen for patterns linked with metabolic syndrome.
- 3 or more core criteria suggest possible metabolic syndrome.
- The risk score adds age, BMI, activity, sleep, smoking, and family history.
- Medication flags count toward related criteria.
Formula Used
The calculator uses a two-part model:
- Core criteria count: Count how many of the five metabolic syndrome criteria are met.
- Weighted risk score: Add lifestyle and background points for age, BMI, activity, sleep, smoking, and family history.
Core criteria score:
Criteria Count = Waist Flag + BP Flag + Glucose Flag + Triglyceride Flag + HDL Flag
Risk score logic:
Risk Score = (Criteria Count × 18) + Age Points + BMI Points + Activity Points + Sleep Points + Smoking Points + Family History Points
Final score is limited to 0–100. A count of 3 or more of 5 core criteria is flagged as possible metabolic syndrome.

Frequently Asked Questions
1) What are the 5 risk factors for metabolic syndrome?
The five defining factors are large waist circumference, high blood pressure, high fasting glucose, high triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol.
2) For which group of people does metabolic syndrome increase the risk of heart disease?
It raises heart disease risk for both men and women. Risk often becomes more concerning when several factors cluster together.
3) Which list does not contain three risk factors required to diagnose metabolic syndrome?
Any list missing at least three defining factors does not qualify. For example, smoking, high LDL, and family history alone are important risks, but they are not the core three-factor diagnostic set.
4) metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors that includes all of the following except
A common “except” answer is high LDL cholesterol. LDL matters for cardiovascular risk, but it is not one of the five defining metabolic syndrome criteria.
5) Can this calculator diagnose metabolic syndrome?
No. It is a screening and education tool. Diagnosis should be made by a clinician using validated measurements, medical history, medication review, and lab interpretation.
6) Why does HDL work differently in the chart?
HDL is protective. Lower HDL raises risk, so the graph uses inverse scaling. That makes lower HDL appear as a higher risk load.
7) What should I do if my score is high?
Arrange a clinical review, repeat abnormal measurements, discuss diet and activity, review sleep and smoking, and ask whether formal metabolic syndrome evaluation is appropriate.
8) Why are medication checkboxes included?
Treatment can indicate that a risk factor already exists even when the current measured value looks controlled. That gives a more realistic screening result.
