Formula Used

1. Total linear run
Total linear run = Sum of selected deck side lengths

2. Effective railing run
Effective railing run = Total linear run − Total openings

3. Estimated posts
Posts per side = Ceiling(Side length ÷ Maximum post spacing) + 1, then shared corners are subtracted once

4. Clear baluster run
Clear run in inches = Effective run × 12 − (Post count × Post width)

5. Estimated balusters
Balusters = Ceiling(Clear run ÷ (Baluster width + Maximum gap))

6. Actual gap check
Actual gap = (Clear run − Balusters × Baluster width) ÷ (Balusters + 1)

7. Rail material
Top rail = Effective run × (1 + Top waste %). Bottom rail follows the same method.

8. Estimated cost
Total cost = (Rail material × Rail cost + Posts + Balusters + Hardware) × Style multiplier
