Example Data Table

Period Entered Grade Scale Converted Percent Weight Contribution
Marking Period 1 88 100 88.00% 25 22.00
Marking Period 2 91 100 91.00% 25 22.75
Marking Period 3 84 100 84.00% 25 21.00
Marking Period 4 94 100 94.00% 25 23.50
Final Weighted Average 89.25%

Formula Used

Converted period percent = (Entered Grade ÷ Grade Scale) × 100

Normalized weight = Period Weight ÷ Total Active Weights

Weighted average = Sum of (Converted Percent × Normalized Weight)

Final average = Weighted Average + Bonus Points

Improvement = Period 4 Percent − Period 1 Percent

If you drop the lowest period, its weight becomes zero and remaining weights are redistributed automatically.

How to Use This Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does this calculator measure?

It combines four marking period grades into one overall result. You can use equal weights, custom weights, bonus points, and optional lowest-period removal for a more flexible academic estimate.

2. Can I use weighting that does not total 100?

Yes. The calculator automatically normalizes active weights. That means any positive values work, because the tool converts them into proportional shares before computing the final weighted average.

3. What is the grade scale field for?

Use the grade scale when your scores are not already percentages. For example, if each period grade is out of 20, enter 20 as the scale and the calculator converts each score to a percentage.

4. What happens if I drop the lowest period?

The lowest converted percentage is excluded from the weighted calculation. Its weight becomes zero, and the remaining periods are reweighted automatically to keep the final result consistent.

5. Does the tool assign letter grades?

Yes. You can choose a simple A–F scale or a plus/minus system. The letter output is based on the calculated final average after weights and bonus points are applied.

6. Why does the weighted average differ from the simple average?

A simple average treats every period equally. A weighted average gives greater influence to periods with larger weights, so it better matches grading policies that value some terms more heavily.

7. What does the chart show?

The chart compares each marking period percentage with the final average and passing threshold. It helps you spot consistency, progress, and whether the overall performance is above target.

8. Can I download the results for records?

Yes. After calculating, you can download a CSV summary or create a PDF snapshot. These exports are useful for student reviews, parent meetings, or planning interventions.
