Retaining Wall Calculator Form
Enter dimensions in meters. Cost is per cubic meter. Set key values to zero if no shear key is used.
Example Data Table
| Wall Length (m) | Stem Height (m) | Top Thickness (m) | Bottom Thickness (m) | Base Thickness (m) | Heel (m) | Toe (m) | Key Depth (m) | Key Thickness (m) | Net Volume (m³) | Gross Volume (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12.00 | 3.00 | 0.20 | 0.40 | 0.35 | 1.20 | 0.80 | 0.30 | 0.25 | 21.780 | 22.869 |
This sample uses a 5% waste allowance, 2400 kg/m³ density, and a unit cost of 145 per cubic meter.
Formula Used
For a tapered stem, the cross-section is treated as a trapezoid. The base slab and shear key are treated as rectangles.
Stem Area = ((Stem Top Thickness + Stem Bottom Thickness) / 2) × Stem Height
Base Width = Heel Width + Stem Bottom Thickness + Toe Width
Base Area = Base Width × Base Thickness
Key Area = Key Depth × Key Thickness
Total Cross-Section Area = Stem Area + Base Area + Key Area
Net Volume = Total Cross-Section Area × Wall Length
Gross Volume = Net Volume × (1 + Waste % / 100)
Estimated Weight = Gross Volume × Concrete Density
Estimated Cost = Gross Volume × Unit Cost per m³

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What parts of the wall are included in the volume?
This calculator includes the stem, base slab, and optional shear key. It does not include footing blinding, drainage stone, formwork, reinforcement, or backfill quantities.
2. Can I use it for a tapered retaining wall stem?
Yes. The stem uses top and bottom thickness values, so the cross-section is calculated as a trapezoid. That makes it useful for common reinforced concrete wall profiles.
3. Why is stem bottom thickness included in base width?
The base width must include the heel, the stem footprint at the base, and the toe. That combined width determines the base slab area and its concrete volume.
4. What should I enter if my wall has no shear key?
Enter zero for shear key depth and thickness. The calculator will then ignore the shear key and only use the stem and base slab volumes.
5. Should I always add a waste allowance?
A waste allowance is usually helpful for ordering. It covers over-excavation, minor dimensional changes, spillage, and practical placement losses during construction.
6. What units should I use?
Keep all dimensions in meters so the output stays in cubic meters. Density should be in kilograms per cubic meter, and cost should be entered per cubic meter.
7. Can this help compare design options?
Yes. Try different heel, toe, stem, or key values to compare concrete demand, weight, and cost before finalizing your preferred retaining wall geometry.
8. Does this replace structural design checks?
No. It estimates quantity only. Sliding, overturning, bearing pressure, drainage, reinforcement, and code compliance still need review by a qualified design professional.
