Example data table

These example rows are illustrative planning cases for common classroom arrangements.

Case Room size Desk size Layout Aisles Buffer Estimated desks Estimated seats
Primary classroom 9.0 m × 7.2 m 0.60 m × 0.45 m Standard Rows 1 main, 0 cross 5% 34 34
Exam room 10.0 m × 8.0 m 0.60 m × 0.45 m Exam Spacing 2 main, 1 cross 10% 28 28
Compact tutorial room 8.5 m × 7.0 m 0.55 m × 0.40 m Compact Teaching 1 main, 0 cross 0% 40 40

Formula used

The calculator fits desks inside the net classroom area after removing edge clearances, teaching space, and aisles.

  • Usable length = Room length − Front teaching zone − Rear clearance − (Cross aisle count × Cross aisle width)
  • Usable width = Room width − Left clearance − Right clearance − (Main aisle count × Main aisle width)
  • Effective row pitch = Desk depth + Adjusted row gap
  • Effective side pitch = Desk width + Adjusted side gap
  • Rows fitted = floor((Usable length + Adjusted row gap) ÷ Effective row pitch)
  • Columns fitted = floor((Usable width + Adjusted side gap) ÷ Effective side pitch)
  • Raw desk count = Rows fitted × Columns fitted
  • Final desk count = floor(Raw desk count × (1 − Planning buffer %)) and then limited by any manual desk cap
  • Estimated seats = Final desk count × Students per desk
  • Area per desk = Usable area ÷ Final desk count

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the classroom length and width using finished internal dimensions.
  2. Input desk width and depth for the furniture you plan to install.
  3. Choose a layout profile that matches normal teaching, exams, compact use, or collaborative work.
  4. Enter the front teaching zone, rear clearance, wall clearances, and aisle sizes.
  5. Set students per desk, then add a planning buffer if you want spare flexibility.
  6. Use the manual desk limit when you must cap furniture below the physical maximum.
  7. Press Calculate Desk Count to show results above the form.
  8. Review the graph, summary table, and advisories before exporting CSV or PDF.

FAQs

1) What dimensions should I measure?

Measure finished wall-to-wall classroom length and width. Then subtract permanent cabinets, columns, radiator covers, door swings, and teaching zones using the clearance fields. Using net dimensions gives a more realistic count than gross floor area.

2) Does this calculator include aisles?

Yes. Main aisles and cross aisles are deducted before row and column fitting. Side and front clearances are also removed, so the desk count reflects circulation space rather than only raw floor area.

3) Can I plan for two students per desk?

Yes. Change the students-per-desk field to 2. The desk count stays the same, but the estimated seating capacity doubles unless a manual desk limit reduces the final number.

4) Why is my final count lower than rows × columns?

The planning buffer and optional desk limit reduce the raw grid count. Use them to leave setup flexibility, improve teacher movement, or match local occupancy targets.

5) Which layout profile should I choose?

Use Standard for everyday classrooms, Exam for wider spacing, Compact when space is tight, and Collaborative when you want more movement room around grouped teaching layouts.

6) Are the results suitable for code approval?

Treat the output as a planning estimate. Final classroom design should still be checked against local building, fire, accessibility, and school furniture standards.

7) What does the graph show?

The Plotly chart compares desk counts under compact, current, and generous spacing assumptions. It helps you see how sensitive capacity is to circulation and comfort choices.

8) Can I export the results?

Yes. Use the CSV button for spreadsheets or the PDF button for a printable summary. The exports capture the main metrics shown in the results table.

Planning note: This tool is best for early classroom layout studies. Irregular rooms, columns, built-in storage, and accessibility routes should be reviewed separately before final furniture placement.
